Beef jerky too salty!! HELP!!?

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

My husband made a batch of beef jerky and accidentally put too much seasoning in it. Now it tastes way too salty and no one wants to eat it. I paid $20 just for the beef so I really didn’t want to throw it away. Does anyone have any suggestions as to anything I can do that will reduce some of the saltiness? Any help would be appreciated. :)

Unfortunately when it comes to salt you can always add more but you cant take it out.

Try serving it with a non salty dish perhaps? How about a simple salad? Just use olive oil as the dressing. Hope this helps.

Homemade Beef Jerky

5 pounds very lean beef or venison, trimmed of all fat
3 tablespoons kosher salt
2 tablespoons ground black pepper
2 tablepoons Emeril's Original Essence, recipe follows

Cut the meat into strips 1-inch wide and 1/2-inch thick, and spread on baking sheets. In a bowl blend the seasonings. Season the meat strips on 1 side, then turn and season the second side. Refrigerate, covered, overnight.
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F.
Cook the meat until it is completely dried, 6 to 8 hours, turning as needed to dry uniformly. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. Eat as desired, or keep tightly covered, refrigerated, for up to 1 month.

Essence (Emeril's Creole Seasoning):
2 1/2 tablespoons paprika
2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons garlic powder
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon dried leaf oregano
1 tablespoon dried thyme

Combine all ingredients thoroughly and store in an airtight jar or container.
Yield: about 2/3 cup

I'm making a care package for a soldier and need help please!?

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

So far I've sent: a season of Friends, a DVD, 2 books on random knowledge (from the Bathroom Reader series), joint supplements, joint cream, toothbrush, floss, a new towel (can you believe he only asked for a toothbrush and towel??), Oreos, his favorite candy, peanuts, baby wipes, mini football, really cool clear plastic cards, poker chips, a 10 pack of dice, foot powder
This time it's a chess set, peanut butter n crackers, a single serving of salsa and chips, individual packs of sugar free koolaid mix, batteries, a poker chip keychain, seasoned sunflower seeds, beef jerky, another DVD. and Cheez Its.
My questions are:
#1 What else would you recommend?
#2 I'm putting a LOT of ziplocks filled condiments packets. Can you send Mc'D's sauces? Or do they need fridgeration?
#3 Would you trust sending something like a PS2 or mp3 player?
#4 Should I send sugar for the koolaid? Or can they get that?
Thank you!
#5 Someone said she sent mini alcohols. Can you do that??

i am currently serving in iraq with the air force and i would personally recommend some hand warmers it is getting down to the low thirtys at times here now and would really help
question 2)yes they dont need refrigeration and i think would be appreciated
3)yes you can send those just get insurence when you send them
4)i would send the sugar but we can but it at the store
5) it all depends on where they are in iraq it is illegal but anywhere else they can get it
